Moments of pause

“Rauhnächte” – have you ever heard about them? Is there even an English translation for this? In German speaking regions we call the period of 12 nights & days ‘between the years’ Rauhnächte. In this weeks Moonday Magic I share with you about this practice because I integrated the practice of the Rauhnächte in my life for the past two years and it has enriched me so incredibly much as entrepreneuress. Why? Because the Rauhnächte traditionally mark a period of time where we “lay down our spinning wheels”. We stop our busy schedule. We give our working minds a halt. We do nothing.

Rauhnächte inspirations

The traditions and practices around the Rauhnächte vary and are diverse. My own personal Rauhnächte practices are based on what I learned from family tradition, on what I read up and learned from others that practice this time, but most importantly they are based on my intuition, on what feels good for me, on what I am capable to implement and live. My practices change and grow every year as I observe how this time can be most supportive to me personally. Are you ready for some inspirations?

We celebrate the Rauhnächte from the 21st of December – the day of the winter solstice – and end it on the morning of the 3rd of January. It is an in-between time, a time between the old year, the past, and the new year, the new that is to come. Since the old is no longer but the new is not yet it marks a beautiful moment to not do anything. To take a step out of all the duties and expectations. To feel what is within us, in the moment.

The 21st of December marks the longest night of the year, the morning after the “re-birth” of the sun that cherishes us with longer days and increasing light from the 22nd of December onwards.

During the twelve days and nights that follow the winter solstice, we lay down all our work and keep our agenda free from appointments. This goes for work as well as for social appointments. I spend the days with a lot of resting, with a lot of ‘Doing Nothing’. For me, doing nothing is a beautiful practice, which automatically has me reflect on the past months, and allows me to feel into my own body on what was good, what I want to further pursue, what I wish to change.

“Do not wash any laundry, do not do any house cleaning or decluttering during this period” is what sounds most clear in my ears from what my mother – grandmother lineage taught me. Yes, beautiful, in bizz this applies to inventory, stock taking, end of year book keeping, taxes, you name it. I did the cleaning as a “New Years cleaning” in the past years because I did not manage earlier – this year around I created space for cleaning and decluttering in the weeks approaching the winter solstice and it feels sooooo good.

What usually comes up in my “doing nothing” practices during the Rauhnächte are walks in the woods, preparing, eating delicious food, peeling pomegranates – and this is pretty much it. Its quite basic and once I get the hang of it a most beautiful feeling of fulfillment floods my body as it relaxes and expands.

I realised that the practice of the ’12 days and nights – Rauhnächte – not doing anything’ have been such an immeasurable gift because there is hardly any time of the year where we truly lay down our work. And on top of this are not pressured by deadlines or work demands because everyone is too busy to be on you as they are engaged in the Christmas festivities.

Not doing anything, not being busy creates a space for us to feel: are these things that I put on my agenda, the activities and action plans for the next year actually what I want, what makes me feel happy? In this space my appreciation for the experiences of the past year as well as clarity about my desires and goals for the year to come unfold naturally without planning or pressure.

Often times these days of not doing anything showed me that my action plans have taken on a life of their own, leading me far off the path I actually intend to take. During the Rauhnächte I caught myself more than once that my plans for the new year were ‘me trying to fulfil tasks and steps for the sheer sake of completing them’. For the sake of tapping my shoulder that ‘I did it’ and hence fulfilled some imaginative people’s expectations in my hunting for appreciation and acceptance.

I came to realise that much of the stress of being so busy and not having any time to do all the things I have to do came from activities and tasks that did not serve my actual desires at all, where rather counter productive. Laying down my work has gifted me with so much time I would have otherwise spent running through my life full of stress. It has gifted me to fill so much more of my life with the things I love.

In the beginning it was hard though …

Implementing the Rauhnächte practices was hard in the beginning. It was a big personal challenge to take a stance for taking time out for myself because it meant for me that I did not part take in traveling around from one family Christmas festivity to the next during Christmas and New Years season.

The way bigger challenge showed to be to lay down my work – sometimes me trying to complete all the projects I still wanted to complete before going into the Rauhnächte took up a good first half of the Rauhnächte itself 🙂 To be honest with you, it is still difficult up to date – though I am improving with every year. Yet, every time I eventually managed to take a halt, to not do anything, it is such a beautiful and fulfilling feeling that filled my entire being.

This year around we started the preparations for the Rauhnächte way early: on first of December. We did not take any new appointments in and used the first three weeks of December to declutter, to bring projects to a completion so we can enter the Rauhnächte “Not doing anything” season with the celebration of the winter solstice on the 21st of December. I am super curious how this years Rauhnächte will play out. We hope this inspires you to get a taste of the Rauhnächte practices yourself – even if it is for a day or two.
